Initially, I wouldn't be interested, unless of course they offered me a whacking great sum to work on the thing, in which case I might consider it. | | | Alex Lichanow Niemcy Local time: 06:37 Członek ProZ.com od 2020 angielski > niemiecki + ...
I think every language has a very apt idiom for this. In German, we call it "sich ins eigene Knie schießen" (to shoot oneself in the knee) or "sich ins eigene Fleisch schneiden" (to cut into one's own flesh).

Not quite as idiomatic as Alex's contribution, but I once heard this sentence "lt's like that man who cut his own family jewels, in order to spite his missus". Hold on to your precious. Mmh, I'm having a déja-vu, I might have already used this expression. Oh well, it's worth saying it again.

I only offer conventional translation, MTPE, editing and proofreading services. So that already excludes participation in AI translation development projects. But refusing a project because of its possible contribution to AI development is something I would never do. So that already excludes participation in AI translation development projects. But refusing a project because of its possible contribution to AI development is something I would never do. I believe it's silly to think this evolution can be stopped or even slowed down by refusing such projects on an individual level. For every translator that refuses to do this, there are probably 5000 others who will gladly accept it. The problem is not AI, the problem is there are way too many translators that shouldn't be a translator in the first place. The Proz FB page is a good indication of that. Several times a week new translators are presenting their services there, not seldomly by stating that they don't have a clue how to start in this business and if anyone has some advice what to do, or if they need a degree. Give me a break. Translation really is the dustbin among industries. Those people (and there are many of them) are probably the first to accept shitty assignments, including AI development tasks. ▲ Collapse

'It's like digging your own grave', which I refuse. (another one to the list)

[Edited at 2024-03-04 09:17 GMT] In Romanian, we say 'cutting the branch you are sitting on', 'digging your own grave', 'hammering nails into your own feet', or 'setting your own suitcase on fire'

I voted no, because I am not sure I can see all the implications, and it makes me dizzy. But everything we write may potentially end up contributing to AI! I think we need to be really, really careful with AI in general. There are areas where it is going to be a valuable tool, but I am afraid many people regard it as a sort of super-power that is going to take over. Who says it will be to our advantage all the way? Like so many great inventions, it will sometimes be too... See more I voted no, because I am not sure I can see all the implications, and it makes me dizzy. There are areas where it is going to be a valuable tool, but I am afraid many people regard it as a sort of super-power that is going to take over. Who says it will be to our advantage all the way? Like so many great inventions, it will sometimes be too much of a good thing, and if it starts sacrificing individuals ´for the greater good´, then it can very soon imitate the tyrants and villains of history, and who knows where it will go from there? It is NOT real intelligence, folks. It does not have a conscience, and it is impossible to predict where and how to block it effectively every time. It is, and always will be, a web of algorithms working out how people think, following a consensus. It is full of bias and blind spots, reflecting the input it gets from humans. We need to question it at every corner, and make sure someone trustworthy can always override it. It´s not a friend, it´s not an enemy, and it´s not an irresistible natural force, but it is guaranteed full of human quirks and flaws as well as helpful ideas! ▲ Collapse

I think the chances of monkeys and GenAI achieving actual results in creative applications (and I am taking the liberty to call translation "creative" here) are about equal. And at least apes like chimpanzees or gorillas also tend to be just as racist as most current AI models.
