The pin screen technique was originally developed for the cinema. I haven't found an example of the toy in French although I did find a web site that referred to the "écran d’épingles" without mentioning the cinema.

Pinscreen animation makes use of a screen filled with movable pins, which can be moved in or out by pressing an object onto the screen. The screen is lit from the side so that the pins cast shadows. The technique has been used to create animated films with a range of textural effects difficult to achieve with traditional cel animation. The technique was developed by Alexandre Alexeieff and his wife Claire Parker who were often guests of the National Film Board of Canada. They made a total of 6 very short films with it, over a period of fifty years.

Placez votre main, ou tout autre objet en relief, sous l'écran d'épingle et soulevez légèrement les épingles.
En bougeant latéralement la main, faites varier l'inclinaison des têtes d'épingles.

Imaginez un rectangle de bois ou de métal peint en blanc, très régulièrement percé de 240 000 trous. Dans chacun des trous est enfoncée une épingle et l'engin ressemble alors à un confortable tapis à clous de fakir nain, sauf qu'ici ces épingles peuvent s'enfoncer librement dans le support. Posez un éclairage rasant sur le côté de ce rectangle. Chaque épingle va alors projeter une ombre. Si toutes les épingles sont sorties au maximum, on va obtenir, par addition de leurs ombres, le noir total sur la surface. Si elles sont à demi enfoncées, leurs ombres seront deux fois moindres et on obtiendra un gris. Si elles sont complètement enfoncées, elle ne projetteront plus aucune ombre sur le support et on aura alors une surface blanche illuminée par l'éclairage.
Avec un tel système, il est possible de dessiner, mais oui ! en enfonçant plus ou moins les épingles à l'aide de différents outils. C'est ainsi qu'en forgeant ombres et lumières, on donne vie à son imaginaire...
