French term

tamisage

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Automotive
In a list of faults noticed by a driver in a road test of a new car there are items such as , and which I can cope with, but also , , and , which are a bit of a mystery (I suspect either creux or trou might be a flat-spot).

All ideas gratefully received!

Wild guess for "tamisage"? Relating it to "lumières tamises".

For "trou" and "creux", I'd guess they're power drops (like tamisage), a "creux" being less pronounced than a "trou" (when power drops off completely).

Really can't help you with tamisage but...

...for what it's worth, I believe that "trou" refers to a lack of acceleration response and may well be translated by "flat spot" as you suggested.

sieving

In Tom Wolfe's book *The Candy Colored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby* (parts of which are about car racing) there is such a word. It most probably refers to the "sieving" type motion of the back of the car, ie makes a periodic transverse motion.

"creux", referring to acceleration, is definetely a flat spot.
for "tamisage", the whole sentence would help - a sieve is not an usual part in a car ( or would it be a filter screen ? the usual word in Fench is "crépine")

filtering, sieving, sifting, straining

perhaps to do with problems with a filter / catalytic converter in this instance?? (I came across the term whilst doing a translation on spent catalysts used in oil refining, but it might be a start)
